EU Stage V

EU Stage V emission standards began to take effect in 2019 in Europe and pose fresh challenges for equipment manufacturers in the 19-560 kW (25-750 hp) range. The biggest impact has been the introduction of a particle number (PN) limit for engines in this power band.

Perkins technologies that help customers meet Stage V requirements include common rail fuel systems, selective catalytic reduction (SCR), diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC) and diesel particulate filters (DPF).

“One of the benefits of partnering with Perkins is that we’ve worked on multiple generations of these technologies, so you have the confidence that we know exactly what we’re doing – because we’ve done it countless times before,” said product marketing manager Alex Eden.

Since Stage IIIB, customers worldwide have taken advantage of our transparent DPF regeneration capabilities, proven across our 1200 Series platform. Our Stage V engines continue to use a regeneration process that runs automatically without machine or operator interruption. So the user’s productivity is always maintained.

Perkins offers the largest range of Stage V engines in the industry, with 14 different models, from 0.5 litre to 18 litre, which deliver power from 8.2 kW (11 hp) to 597 kW (800 hp). Whatever agricultural machines you’re designing, we have a Perkins engine to power it – all of which also meet U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final emission standards.

China Nonroad Stage IV

In China, Perkins has been ramping up its collaboration with machine manufacturers to integrate China Nonroad Stage IV engines into their machines. The regulations are expected to come into force on December 1, 2020 for all non-road mobile machines (NRMMs).

“The new emission standards represent a big change for Chinese OEMs, but with the right planning and by collaborating with an experienced engine company like Perkins, it should be a smooth process,” said Tommy Quan, Perkins Asia director of sales and distribution.

Perkins will offer customers a broad range of 0.7 to 18 litre engines at China NR Stage IV, with a top power output of 470 kW (630 hp). The range also offers significant performance improvements, including higher power density and torque, enabling customers to get more power for their machine from a smaller package size.

“We’re extremely confident in the performance and durability of our China NR Stage IV engines, which also seek to maximise OEMs’ productivity,” Tommy added.

Brazil MAR-1

Brazil’s newest emissions standards are MAR-1 (U.S. EPA Tier 3 equivalent). In the agriculture sector, engines above 75 kW (101 hp) had to adapt to MAR-1 from January 2017. A second wave, starting in January 2019, required engines between 19 and 75 kW (25 and 101 hp) to also comply.

Perkins has an extensive product line-up to meet MAR-1 requirements. Not least our Perkins® 1100 Series, which has been produced in our Curitiba factory for a decade.
