Small wonders

Perkins® Syncro 2.8 litre and 3.6 litre engines set an impressive new standard for smaller engines. Compact, powerful and quiet, they offer the power density to downsize, while driving productivity and savings on every job. With the 3.6 industrial already in production, the 2.8 will also be rolling off our Peterborough production lines from November.

The new Perkins® Syncro 2.8 and 3.6 engines break impressive ground for their unrivalled power density and flexible design. For leading global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), they’re quickly becoming the first choice for powering compact agricultural machines.

After a rigorous period of testing, which included running the engines for more than 25,000 hours in an internal fleet of nine applications, the 3.6 model has been in production since the middle of this year. And from this November, production of the 2.8 variant will also be under way.

“These engines have been validated to prove they’ll deliver consistently and meet any challenge,” said Perkins Syncro product marketing manager Alex Eden.

The four cylinder Perkins Syncro 2.8 litre provides a maximum of 55 kW (74 hp) with torque of 300 Nm for the turbocharged (T) model and 380 Nm for the turbocharged aftercooled (TA) version. The industrial 3.6 litre delivers 100 kW (134 hp) and up to 550 Nm of torque, while the agricultural tractor variant offers 530 Nm of torque and maintains 100 kW.

“The high power density, high torque and compact design easily enables OEMs to downsize. With great fuel consumption, fast response and electronic integration, the engines are a powerful choice for manufacturers looking to differentiate their machines,” said Alex.

On noise, the new engines are 3 db quieter than the 3.4 litre 854 engine they replace, meaning OEMs can reduce their spend on sound insulation, or choose to improve the level of comfort for machine users.

Five good reasons to switch to Perkins® Syncro

1.    Functional performance

Our engines don’t just deliver on power; they deliver on start-up, torque, ambient conditions such as altitude and temperature and response. “We’ve calibrated the engines to make sure they accept 85 percent of low load at start – so even if you downsize, you can be confident your machine will be fully responsive,” said Alex. “We’ve also spent a lot of time developing the right torque curves, so your engine won’t stall even under the toughest conditions.” The Perkins Syncro engines also meet the highest standards on temperature and altitude. They’ll run reliably whatever the weather and are proven to show no derate up to 3,000 metres.

2.    Packaging and integration

Because the Perkins Syncro engines draw maximum power from the smallest package, OEMs can downsize with ease. “Our aftertreatment sizes are small too, which reduces the engineering work required by OEMs and helps with packaging,” said Alex. We also offer engine-mounted aftertreatment on both engines, which means all parts are supplied and have been validated, giving OEMs the lowest installed cost. And because the 2.8 and 3.6 have been designed to be ‘brother and sister’ – with the same main interfaces and touch points – OEMs can power a range of equipment with very little change to their installation.

3.    Fluid consumption

We’ve achieved significant improvements on fluid consumption on both the 2.8 and 3.6 platforms. With the 2.8 achieving the maximum allowed power without requiring a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, you get a power-packed engine with no diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) required. Both the 2.8 litre and 3.6 litre options also deliver 10 percent better fuel economy than the engines they replace. All this, with no sacrifice on power.

4.    Preventative maintenance

Our Perkins Syncro engines require the minimum preventative maintenance, which makes it easy for customers to keep their engines in prime condition and ensures machine downtime is virtually non-existent. Key features include 500-hour service intervals, fit-for-life no-service aftertreatment, with transparent regeneration meaning no down time for the operator and side access for service points that keeps maintenance simple.

5.    Reliability and durability

Perkins Syncro engines have been extensively validated in agricultural machines. We’ve carried out endurance testing, cooling checks, air system flow checks and electrical checks. We’ve even taken the engines to the far north of Sweden to run them at extreme temperatures of -40°C. “We’ve signed off the reliability and durability of these engines – so customers can be reassured that the engine that goes out to them is absolutely dependable, and absolutely right,” concluded Alex.

“Perkins® Syncro 2.8 and 3.6 litre industrial engines are tailor made for compact agricultural machines. They’ve been engineered to integrate perfectly with your machine design and deliver the right value and performance to support your business growth.” Alex Eden, Perkins® Syncro product marketing manager.
